We’ve kicked off the new year with celebrations, deep cleaning and maybe even laid out some goals or new habits we want to accomplish. But let’s make sure we focus on what’s most important: our quality time with family and more specifically, screen-free activities. Let’s make sure we are being intentional with how we spend our time together and fill that time with opportunities to strengthen the bonds within your family. As we navigate the fast-paced world of technology, it’s crucial to carve out time for screen-free activities that foster genuine connections. In this blog post, we’ll explore 10 delightful ways your family can embrace the spirit of togetherness in 2024 and beyond.
1. Family Game Night
Bring out the classic board games or card decks and immerse your family in an evening of laughter, friendly competition, and shared enjoyment. Whether it’s a strategic board game or a lively round of charades, the key is to create an atmosphere of fun and interaction. We love doing this weekly in our family and set out our favorite snacks and treats! Monopoly Junior is our personal fave for a fun one for younger kids (and doesn’t last for hours).
2. Outdoor Adventures
Step outside and explore the wonders of nature together. Whether it’s a hike in the woods, a day at the beach, or a simple picnic in the park, spending time outdoors provides an excellent opportunity for your family to connect away from the distractions of screens. Check out our article on the 10 best national parks for kids!

3. DIY Family Project
Engage your creativity by undertaking a do-it-yourself family project. This could be anything from crafting homemade decorations to starting a small garden together. The sense of accomplishment and shared effort will strengthen the family bond.
4. Storytelling Time
Gather around and share stories from your past. This could be tales from your childhood, family anecdotes, or even creating imaginative stories together. Storytelling not only builds a sense of identity but also encourages open communication. Pull out your old family pictures and share your favorite memories with your kids!
5. Cooking and Baking
Turn your kitchen into a hub of delicious aromas and shared experiences. Pick a recipe, gather the ingredients, and let everyone participate in the cooking or baking process. The joy of creating a meal together is unparalleled. Get your kids started in the kitchen early so they have a sense of ownership over the family meals! We love this starter baking kit for little ones.
6. Family Volunteer Day
Make a positive impact on your community by participating in volunteer activities as a family. This could include serving at a local food bank, participating in a neighborhood cleanup, or helping out at a community event. It’s a meaningful way to bond while making a difference.
7. Family Reading Time
Choose a book that suits everyone’s interests and designate a specific time for family reading. Whether it’s a chapter each night or an entire book over the weekend, this shared activity promotes literacy and provides an opportunity for meaningful discussions. For us, this is a chapter out of our favorite kid’s bible each evening before bed.
8. Stargazing Night
Head outside on a clear evening and gaze at the stars. You can even make it a learning experience by identifying constellations together. Stargazing encourages contemplation and allows for quiet, reflective moments with your loved ones. For a fun addition, turn this into a smores night, too! We snuggle around our outdoor firepit (we found this one on sale and it’s so easy to use!) and roast marshmellows.
9. Arts and Crafts
Unlock your artistic potential by engaging in a family arts and crafts session. Whether you’re painting, drawing, or creating DIY crafts, the process of making something together fosters creativity and collaboration. Tip: Find some flat rocks while on a hike together and bring them home to paint!
10. Family Worship Time
Devote time to spiritual growth by engaging in family worship. This could include reading scripture, sharing prayers, or singing hymns together. It’s a beautiful way to deepen your faith as a family and reinforce the values that bind you together. We found this family devotional and it’s a beautiful one for families with little ones.
As we step into 2024, let’s prioritize the moments that truly matter—those shared with the ones we love. By embracing screen-free activities, we not only foster family bonding but also create lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come. Unplug, unite, and embark on a year filled with meaningful connections. We can’t wait to hear how some of these simple things help create memorable moments for your family. Let us know which activities you try!
